Vijitha
Ameresekere’s musical interest began at the early age of 7
when he would listen to his mother and sisters play the piano. He
maintained his musical interest throughout college when he would
play music for his classmates like Paul Fernando. He followed on
to perform in two bands called ‘Selections’ and ‘Universe’
backing numerous artists and playing in a variety of stage shows
in Sri–Lanka.
After
graduating from Prince of Wales College he completed his higher
studies at Moratuwa University. He then followed onto work as a
Mechanical Engineer at the Sri-Lankan Steel Corporation for a period
of 11 years.
Vijitha
migrated to Australia in 1988 with his wife, son and daughter. In
Australia, his musical competency was established by performing
solo for small house party entertainment. In 1988, he joined the
Sri-Lankan band: ‘Dinkum Lankans’ as the keyboard player.
Later, the ever popular ‘Blossoms’ was formed.
Vijitha
has lead the lively active band for the past 15 years, who have
performed all over Australia, including the Centre Point in Sydney
as well as The Mirage in Adelaide for the Cricketer’s Dance.
At
present, Vijitha is in the process of releasing an album including
his debut single ‘Yatagiya Davasaka’ dedicated to his
late mother. Other singles featured in the album will include ‘Madu
Malaka’, ‘Suralowa Suragana’, ‘Me Varusave’
and ‘Ratharan’. Lyrics for ‘Yataguya Davaska’
were written by the late L.B.Ekanayaka from Victoria. Lyrics and
melodies for the later four songs were supplied by Bhadrajee Mahinda
Jayathilake. Music for all songs were composed by Rohana Weerasinghe.
