After my A/Ls, I completed my Special Degree in Ruhunu University.
After completion of the degree in 1992, I was appointed as an assistant
lecturer in the department of; Zoology in the same university. During
my period of my studies or teaching, I did not missed any chance
to be a member of Guitarist or keyboardist for music bands around
me as that talent has been inherited to me by my farther(Violinist)
I have been playing for at least 10 music bands in Sri Lanka with
great Guitarists and superb keyboardists including Kalutara Susil
Sirmanne-Sax player for Patrick Denipitia, Ranil Vass- Moratuva
(Guitarist for Dalring (Subi), Abenanda- Dehiwala (Keyboardist for
band “Fortunes”) Mervin Perera-Maggona (Great Violinist-)
and his son (Great Guitarist) Athma Liyanage-Kalutara (great Guitarist
and Keyboardist)…may be 10-20 of them.
Also, I was capable to provide background stage music as a guitarist
or keyboardist for great, great singers during that time including,
Grecian Ananda, Maxell Mendis, T.M jayaratne, Mervin Perera, Danapala
Udawatte, Sanath Nandasiri and Malkanthi Nanadasiri, Nihal Nelson…may
be 20-30 Sri Lankan Singers during 80s and 90s.
Also, I am very proud to say that, I played in three, four and five
star hotels from Colombo Hilton to Hambatota Peacock beach hotel
along the costal area for at least 12- 13 years including Colombo
Hilton, Club 2000, where our band “Jazz Cola” was selected
as the 8th of 100 excellent Sri Lankan bands from a great band competition
judged by Sohan and Experiments in 1990. (Refer to Figures), Ceylon
inns, Tangerine…may be 50 hotels or even more
After Migrating to Australia, I composed my own very first solo
CD including 10 songs based on my brand new melodies and my very
own music direction and also my playing( 8 of 10 songs written by
Padmasiri Herath, Melbourne).
I must also thank to Badra Karunarathna for broadcasting my first
song “Oba Gangak” through Canberra Radio “Hela
Handa” and several months later, my very first CD was launched
in 2003, 14 of November at Blue Elephant Restaurant, Canberra.
Thank you all,
Don Mithrananda Sirimanne
