JVP MP caught in human trafficking urged to resign

Anuruddha Polgampola, a JVP MP who was accused of smuggling a person to Japan submitted his resignation letter to the Acting Parliamentary Secretary Dhammika Disanayaka today (03).

Lanka-e-News reported the incident on September 01 under the heading ‘JVP MP nabbed for human trafficking.’

MP Polgampola was questioned on August 29 by Japan immigration authorities at Narita airport for attempting to smuggle a person named Rohana to Japan. After returning to Sri Lanka the MP decided to submit the resignation following a disciplinary probe of the party.

Several other JVP MPs are also accused of engaging in a racket of smuggling people to foreign countries for job seeking.

The General Secretary of the United People’s Freedom alliance (UPFA) will take action to name the next candidate of the election list to the vacancy of the MP when the Acting Parliamentary Secretary forwards the MP’s resignation letter to the Election Commissioner.
