Twelve alleged LTTE operatives arrested in Papua New Guinea
2.9.2008

Twelve Sri Lankans suspected to be LTTE aides were detained by the Papua New Guinea (PNG) Intelligence officials. The group was believed to be planning to travel to Australia with false passports, Australian Media reported today (02).
The men, aged 19 to 26, were detained after authorities were tipped off about their suspicious behavior, the Melbourne Herald Sun of Australia reported, citing PNG's National Intelligence Organization.

These men were arrested at a hotel in Port Moresby today.

The interrogations are proceeding to clarify their connections with the banned terrorists outfit, LTTE.

"The group is being questioned and we are trying to find out their connection to the Tamil Tiger movement, as well as whether they are staying in PNG or heading south (to Australia), the National Intelligence Organisation (NIO) announced.

A spokesman for the NIO said it was believed the group planned to travel from PNG's Western Province to Australia via the Torres Strait.

"Intelligence officers have questioned the men who allegedly arrived in PNG this week on falsified tourist visas", the news agencies further report.
