State funeral for Ex-President D.B.Wijetunga

All government schools in the Kandy district will remain closed on Thursday, the day of the funeral of former President D.B. Wijetunga.

The government announced that all liquor and meat shops in the Divisional Secretariat Divisions of Udunuwara, Yatinuwara and Gangawata Korale will also remain closed on this day. The general public could now pay their last respects to the remains of the President lying at his residence at Pilimathalawa. The body will be kept at the parliament complex from 9.00 am to 11.00 am on Thursday.

The funeral will take place at the Gatambe public esplanade on Thursday afternoon.

Meanwhile President Mahinda Rajapakse has expressed his deep condolences on the death of former President D.B. Wijethuga.

The President, who is currently in New York to attend the United Nations General Assembly, in a special message says the name of Wijethunga will be best remembered for his firm attitude against terrorism and the need for it to be eliminated. President Rajapakse has further stated that the late Mr. Wijethunga could also be identified a leader for restoring faith in democracy among the people.

President Rajapaksa conveyed his deepest sympathies at demise of Mr. Wijethunga to his daughter. He has directed the government to take all action, in consultation with the family of the late Mr. Wijethunga, for funeral arrangements befitting a former Head of State and true patriot.
