President Mahinda Rajapaksa will be among 100 heads of state
attending the 63rd session of the UN General Assembly, which
will be chaired by UN Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon and
where current world trends including global health issues,
poverty alleviation, impact of climate change will be discussed.
The sessions began on the 16th of September at the UN headquarters
in New York. This year's session will focus on several issues
pertaining to the implementation of Africa's Development
Treaty. The UN is currently engaged in providing special
relief activities in seventy African countries for over
90 million of a population.
A high profile meeting will be held on the 22nd under the
theme of "Challenges Ahead" and on the 25th a
special discussion will take place over the Millennium Development
Goals.
The United Nation, with a membership of 192 countries, has
set up a USD 2 billion to fund to assist member states in
emergency disaster situations. |
