Last United Nations vehicle leaves rebel-held area of Sri Lanka
16.9.2008

The last vehicle of the United Nations left the rebel-held and entered the cleared area in Vavuniya on Tuesday evening, days after the Sri Lanka government asked all relief workers in rebel-held areas to leave for security reasons.

“A convoy of 10 aid workers reached the Omanthai checkpoint safely after driving along a road that has been hit by intensified fighting between the military and the LTTE,” a spokesman for the UN said.

The government ordered all aid agencies out of the northern war zone on September 9 as the military intensifies an offensive towards rebel-held Kilinochchi.
