Controversial Sri Lankan Minister's supporter remanded

Sept 09, Colombo: Nuwan Udaya Gunathilaka, also known as "Kudu Nuwan" who has been accused of the rape of a women in a city’s Night club was remanded by the Colombo Magistrate Courts this evening.

Gunathilaka is supposedly a close confidante of Sri Lanka’s controversial Labor Minister Mervyn Silva.

The accused had surrendered himself this morning to the Kolpetty police and was ordered to be remanded until 18th of this month upon presentation in courts.

The lawyers of the accused had requested the Court to detain the accused in a location other than the Magazine prison where he has received several death threats. Accordingly the Court ordered the accused to be detained at the Colombo Remand Prison.

The police have informed the Courts that a probe in to the incident has already begun. Also Nuwa Udaya Gunathilaka is one of the main suspects, who assaulted the State Rupawahini’s News Director last December with Minister Mervyn Silva.
