Heavy clashes erupt in the North of Mannar; Nine terrorists killed

Heavy clashes erupted across the security forces' Forward Defence Line (FDL) in the West of Wanni as troops foiled terrorists' bid to break the FDL in the Giants Tank area last afternoon (September 24).

Defence sources said that infantry troops backed by the artillery fire crushed the terror attack that took place around 12:45 p.m. The sources further said that three soldiers were killed and few others were injured in the initial confrontation. The injured have been directed to the immediate medical attention.

Meanwhile, sources in Wanni said about eight bodies of LTTE carders were observed lying beyond the troops' positions in the FDL. According to the information obtained through radio monitoring, 09 LTTE cadres had been killed and at least 36 injured due to the army retaliation. Further, it has been reported that a heavy vehicle belonged to the LTTE terrorists had been completely destroyed due to the army artillery fire.

Troops have launched search operation in the area, the sources further added.
