Local Transport Minister Dalas Alahapperuma
says public views and proposals on a proposed national
transport policy are now being referred. The main objective
of this policy was to provide an improved transport service
to commuters. The government hopes to consult in the idea
of various sections in the country. Minister Alahapperuma
said the transport sector needs a stable policy which
cannot be changed with the changes of governments. The
Bill pertaining to the policy drafted by a panel of experts
will be submitted to parliament early next year. The Minister
said special attention has been focussed on three-wheelers
and school bus services in preparing this policy. The
Minister added that a systematic transport programme has
now been adopted under advice of the President. It will
be implemented in several stages.
