Sri
Lanka parliament heated up today when the Upcountry People's
Front (UPF) leader and Minister P. Chandrasekaran appreciated
the interest of the Tamil Nadu politicians on the situation
of northern Sri Lanka.
Minister
Chandrasekaran who represents Indian origin Tamils in upcountry
estate areas in the country said that the mediation of Tamil
Nadu on the situation of Sri Lanka cannot be avoided.
The
parliamentary members raised their voices against him when
he expressed this idea in a special statement, After National
Freedom Front leader Wimal Weerawansa protested the statement,
and Minister Chandrasekaran said that he made the statement
as the leader of the UPF.
Opposition
Leader Ranil Wickremasinghe pointed out that the statement
went against the collective responsibility of the government.
The Government Chief Whip Dinesh Gunawardena objected the
idea.
Meanwhile,
JVP MP Vijitha Herath inquired the government position on
Minister Chandrasekaran's statement. Foreign Minister Rohitha
Bogollagama in response said that the Minister’s stance
was not the government position.
