Rejecting the request of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Muthuvel Karunanidhi to impose a ceasefire on the neighboring island nation of Sri Lanka New Delhi's ruling Congress Party said India cannot impose her power beyond her borders on other sovereign nations.

On the previous day, in a political step that virtually means another lease of political life for the main suspects of the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi-namely Velupillai Prabhakaran, the leader of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) and his intelligence chief Pottu Amman, the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu Muthuvel Karunanidhi announced that all Members of parliament of Tamil Nadu should resign if New Delhi would not impose a ceasefire in the military conflict in Sri Lanka within two weeks. At present, Prabhakaran is trapped in a bunker now and surrounded by Sri Lankan security forces.

Speaking over Times Now TV channel Singhvi Congress spokesperson Abhishek Singhvi said that demands made by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister were unrealistic.

"Those who make demands about other sovereign countries should know that India's sovereignty runs through the boundaries of India... The parties should also understand that you are not dealing with a part of India but a sovereign nation."

He said , Sri Lanka's issue comes under the domain of international affairs and should be dealt exclusively by the Central Government.

"That is something in the exclusive domain of the Centre (foreign relation issue), he told the Times Now Channel, while condemning any violent act in another country, I do not think anything should be done or asked from the Central Government."

Another spokesman Manish Tewari said the concerns of the parties in Tamil Nadu have been conveyed to Sri Lanka through the Deputy High Commissioner.

The Sri Lanka security forces opened corridors for the civilians to escape from the war ravaged Kilinochchi but both the government and humanitarian organizations have complained that the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam have blocked their movement to use them as a human shield.
