Jaffna farmers will cultivate 7000 hectares of paddy

15.10.2008

Farmers in Jaffna will cultivate 7,000 hectares of paddy lands this year thanks to the timely arrival of the monsoon rain. It is reported that the farmers have selected high yielding varieties of paddy for cultivation this season. Paddy cultivation in the peninsula was given a significant boost by the Government and the World Food Program, with the distribution of over 100 metric tonnes of seed paddy for the farmers and the releasing of paddy lands for cultivation after 10 years. These lands were taken over by the Army due to security concerns.
