The military funeral of the late Major General Janaka Perera
RWP RSP VSV USP rcds psc took place this evening at the
General Cemetery Colombo 8 in a Solemn and dignified manner,
amidst senior Army officers and a large gathering of mourners.
Major
General Janaka Perera's wife, Mrs Vajira Perera who was
also assassinated in the suicide explosion was also cremated
at the same venue.
The
cortŠge on arrival at the main entrance to the General
Cemetery was respectfully taken over by officers and other
ranks of the Army according to the military tradition and
placed the National flag- draped coffin on the Gun Carrier
As
the Gun Carrier started moving a thirteen minute gun salute
heralded onset of the military funeral
Soon
after the remains reached the crematorium, Brigadier HL
Perera read out the official Part I Order of the Army that
summarizes his service carrier, gallantry awards and decorations
he received his professional record and how his soldiering
was
Another
round of thirteen gun salute in honour of the slain military
leader followed afterwards adding dignity to the final journey
of this battle hardened warrior.
As
the last leg of the military funeral, uncapped soldiers
carried the coffin thrice along with the members of the
bereaved family. Seconds after, the military bugles sounded
the last post as bellows of smoke circled emitting from
the chimney in the crematorium
Chief
of Staff Major General Nissanka Wijesinghe in the company
of a few senior officers afterwards handed this war hero's
gallantry medals and other decorations to family members
of the slain military officer extending sincere condolences
on the demise.
A
large gathering attended the funeral.
