As
the frenzy over the country’s victory in the recently concluded
Twenty20 world cricket championship is cooling down, the Indian
players may be in for trouble as a local lawyer has filed a complaint
in a local court accusing them of showing disrespect and contempt
to the Indian flag after winning the final match with Pakistan.
Advocate
Arvind Sharda who filed the criminal complaint in a Jalandhar
court has listed BCCI president Sharad Pawar and vice president
Rajiv Shukla as well as ESPN STAR Sports commentator Ravi Shastri
as witnesses.
In
his complaint filed under the Flag Code of India read with the
Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act, 1971 - as amended
up to date - Sharda has alleged when the Indian team won the tournament
on September 24 in Johannesburg, South Africa, the accused (players)
in their expression of victorious mood, which continued for about
an hour, showed all sorts of disrespect to the Indian tricolour.
He
has mentioned team captain MS Dhoni along with 14 other members
of the Indian squad as respondents/accused.
Enumerating
some of the instances, Shards has alleged that the disrespect
included putting the Indian flag around the neck and back, pouring
champagne on it, allowing it to fall on the ground from one’s
hand and carrying it upside down.
While
some indulged in these activities others did not stop them, he
has stated. The advocate said the players committed a grave offence
before millions of Indians who were watching them on TV, and Indian
newspapers and magazines are in possession of photographs of the
said wrongdoings of the accused.
When
these alleged offences were being committed Pawar, Shukla and
Shastri were also present in the Johannesburg stadium and witnessed
the incident, he has claimed.
Sharda
has also listed the concerned ESPN officials along with a video
recording, while stating the list of other witnesses would be
produced later.
He
submitted the complaint in the court of duty magistrate Barjinder
Pal Singh on Tuesday as the chief judicial magistrate, in whose
court it was to be submitted, was on leave. He said the CJ’s
court would take up the complaint on Wednesday. |
