Australian
cricket legend Shane Warne last night declared he’s not
worried about prolific Sri Lankan off-spinner Muttiah Muralitharan
breaking his world record this summer.
Murali
needs nine wickets to surpass Warne's record of 708 Test scalps.
"Murali
can get a thousand if he wants, it doesn't worry me,'' Warne said.
"I
think I have always played the way I wanted to. People will have
an opinion on the way I have played the game and I hope they have
enjoyed it.
"It
will be a bit of a sad day, but at the end of it all I am very
proud of what I have achieved and if someone breaks your record,
then well done.''
Muralitharan
will arrive in Australia on Tuesday for a two-Test series, the
first starting in Brisbane on November 8 and the second in Hobart,
starting on November 16. Warne has no doubt Muralitharan will
reclaim the record the Sri Lankan held briefly in 2004.
"Good
luck to Murali, but hopefully the Aussie boys can make it a bit
of hard work for him,'' Warne said.
"At
the end of the day, he probably will get to 1000, so good luck
to him. I said that he would probably get to 1000 wickets 10 years
ago and I am sure he will.
"I
don't play for records and all that sort of stuff. I am pretty
confident that I have left my mark on the game and the way that
I played the game. I think I played in the right spirit throughout
my career. I would like to think I have entertained.''
Warne
called for calm ahead of Sri Lanka’s arrival in Australia
amid fears Muralitharan may be subjected to racial taunts. Those
concerns are heightened by the fact that when Muralitharan toured
here in 2002-03, the off-spinner had bananas thrown at him by
some members of the crowd at the Gabba. "If there has been
any racism, well there is no place for that in any sport,"
he said. |
