Former
Australian spin king Shane Warne believes fans won't racially
taunt Indian players this summer as revenge for the treatment
handed out to Andrew Symonds on the recent sub-continent tour.
And
he thinks his luckless understudy Stuart MacGill should get the
job for the summer Test series.
The
taunting of Symonds in India on the recent tour has the game's
authorities bracing for a backlash during the upcoming visits
by Sri Lanka and India.
Warne
says Australian fans have been generous in the past in congratulating
achievements on the field by visiting players and believes it
will be the case again this summer.
"Australian
crowds are pretty good," he said.
Warne
was speaking at the opening of an American doughnut store at Crown
Casino which is kicking in $1 for every doughnut sold today for
the Shane Warne Foundation which provides support to ill and underprivileged
children.
He
thinks MacGill, who has been kept out of Australian teams over
the years because of Test wicket record holder Warne, is the logical
choice to succeed him.
"He's
been around for a long time and deserves his chance," Warne
said.
"I
hope he does well."
While
Warne backed MacGill he also praised Brad Hogg, who impressed
in the Australian one-day matches in India.
And
he also said the time was approaching to put a young spinner into
the team where he could mature amongst more experienced players.
"When
a team is successful you can get a young player in there with
the other players who know the ropes," he said.
Warne
said he has been in talks with Cricket Australia to find a way
for him to help cricketers playing in the domestic competition
in a mentoring role.
"I
love Australian cricket and if I can help out in any way ... I'm
talking to Cricket Australia about mentoring and working with
captains at state level in conjunction with spinners," Warne
said.
