Clashes in Wanni FDL leave 16 LTTE cadres killed - Army

Sporadic clashes in the Wanni front continued for the day as LTTE terrorists launched several strikes at the security forces' Forward Defence Line (FDL) in the West of Omanthai, said military.

Two LTTE groups simultaneously attacked the soldiers manning the FDL at two different locations around 10.a.m. (October 4). Military said troops crushed the terror attacks successfully killing five LTTE cadres at one incident and another four in the other.

Separately, in the general area Vilathikulam, troops killed seven LTTE cadres who had come on a tractor around 2.30 this afternoon. Troops said that the group of LTTE cadres had opened fire at them.

In Vavuniya, LTTE terrorists missed their target in a claymore attack triggered around 9.a.m. The bomb was intended for an army foot patrol, sources said.

Troops suffered no casualties in any of the incidents mentioned above, sources added.

In Mannar, navy sailors found more supplies ready to be transported to LTTE at Pesalai around 3 this evening. Navy sources said that the sailors on a search found two out board boat engines, 1050 litres of diesel, and 50 Cement bags weighing 50kgs each , from a scrub jungle.

Meanwhile, in the Northern Peninsula, civilians continued to support troops to curb terror activities by providing vital information. In the general area Thirunaveli, troops acting on civilian information uncovered an explosive belt used by suicide bombers, a T-56 riffle with ammunition and a radio communication set . The items were found in an abandoned building around 4.30 p.m.
