Sri Lankan scholar awarded ‘Alternative Nobel Prize’

Alternative Nobel Prize was a result of the need to recognize work ignored by the prestigious World Nobel Prize. This was founded by a Swedish- German Philanthropist- Jakob Von Uexkull.

Activists from Sri Lanka, Kenya, Canada and Bangladesh were named winners of the 2007 ‘Right Livelihood Award’ also known as the ‘Alternative Nobel Prize’ for their contributions in promoting Peace, Bio diversity and Renewable energy.

The awards value is Euro 218,000 (US$ 310,000).

Sri Lanka legal scholar Christopher Weeramantry a former Vice President of the International Court of Justice is among the recipients of the award for his effort on ‘Strengthen and expand the rule of international law.
