Hi-tech
radar network will be installed by the Meteorology Department
with the aim of providing more accurate advanced weather warnings
to the people.
The
new state-of-art weather radar network will cost Rs.400 million
and an advance payment of Rs. 160 million has been paid to the
World Meteorological Union. A weather expert from the World Meteorological
Union is here for a feasibility study to select the most suitable
location for setting up this radar station.
According to the Director of Meteorology Department P.M.Jayatilleke,
arrangements have been made to get this modern Doppler radar station
installed in Sri Lanka.
This new Doppler weather radar station will enable the Meterological
Department to provide instant weather information to any area
at any time.
It
would also be able to provide information vital for air traffic
and advanced warnings of floods, earthslips and other natural
disasters to minimize damage caused by them.
