Melbourne: In recognition of the relationship between Australia and Sri Lanka, the Australia Sri Lanka Council together with the Rotary District 9820 of Melbourne Victoria organised a cultural show and garden party at the Government House in Melbourne on Saturday 22 November 2008.

The hosts of the event were Sri Lankan born Governor of Victoria, Professor David de Kretser and Mrs Jan de Kretser. Invitees from the Melbourne Sri Lankan and Australian communities together with members of the Rotary Club had the privilege of meeting with the Governor and his wife at their official residence. In the Governor’s address he expressed his pleasure over enduring relations between Sri Lankans and Australians. He later posed for photographs and mingled with guests.

The garden tea party was sponsored by Sri Lanka’s illustrious Dilmah tea. The guests were also treated to a meal of rice and curry and a display of native Sri Lankan jewelry and wild life photography. Over 500 guests attended the ceremony. They had the rare opportunity to have a look around the Governor’s home.

The function was also attended by Consul General of Sydney Mrs. Gothami Indikadahena, MP for Cranebourne Mr Jude Perera, and other distinguished guests. Mrs Sriya Jayawardena was the Project Manager of the event.
