Bulls down Sri Lanka

Queensland has defeated Sri Lanka by four wickets in their three-day tour match at the Allan Border Field in Brisbane.

The Bulls needed 142 to win on the final day, but were in trouble at 6-78 before a superb partnership by Ashley Noffke and Clinton Perren guided them to victory.

Ryan Broad and Jimmy Maher got the hosts off to a solid start before Farveez Maharoof dismissed them both in the space of two overs.

This sparked a mini collapse with Andrew Symonds, Chris Simpson, Andy Bichel, and Chris Hartley all going out for a combined total of 12 runs.

However, the visitors failed to claim the wicket of Perren, who anchored the Queensland innings with 62 runs from 74 balls.

Noffke was able to hold his wicket and chipped in for 21 to ensure the Bulls reached the required total.

Maharoof was the best Sri Lankan bowler, collecting three wickets from his nine overs, while Lasith Malinga chimed in with two from his eleven overs.

Sri Lanka had begun the day struggling at 4-62 and things got immediately worse when Noffke grabbed his third wicket sending Chamara Silva back to the pavilion.

Mahela Jayawardene spent over two hours at the crease and faced 110 balls for a measly total of just 35 before Mitchell Johnson and Hartley combined to dismiss him.

The tourists continued to lose wickets at a steady rate and found themselves at 8-133 before Chaminda Vaas rescued the innings with a superb 84 off just 76 balls.

Vaas was the last man dismissed, helping the Sri Lankan's to a total of 226, which meant Queensland needed 142 runs to secure victory.

Noffke and Michael Kasprowicz starred for the bulls collecting three wickets each, whilst Bichel rounded off his fine match with two wickets.

Sri Lanka will have to improve significantly if they are to trouble the Australians when the First 3-Mobile Test begins on Thursday.
