The Emergency was extended by a majority of 120 votes at the Parliament today (06). Prime Minister Rathnasiri Wickramanayake tabled the proposal for extending the law.
Lakshman Seneviratne opening the debate for the UNP said that his party had decided to abstain ‘as a mark of respect to war heroes’.
Only 5 TNA parliamentarians were present. S. Srikanthan explained that 12 TNA MPs who had attended the funeral of S.P. Thamilselvan were trapped in Killinochchi as the Omanthai entry-exit point was closed due to the withdrawal of the ICRC.
The vote to extend the Emergency was passed with 124 voting for and 04 voting against it. The JVP voted with the Government.
