The Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM) has issued a statement on the killing of S.P. Thamilchelvan expressing its concern. The same SLMM was silent when the LTTE attacked Anuradhapura airbase. Following is the SLMM statement over the killing of S.P. Thamilchelvan:..

Regarding the death of Mr. S.P. Tamilselvan, leader of the LTTE Political Wing The extensive military operations in the Northern region of Sri Lanka, conducted by both parties to the Ceasefire Agreement (CFA) of 2002, comprising land, sea and air forces have over the recent weeks reached unprecedented proportions.

This morning an SLAF air strike in Vanni resulted in the death of reportedly 6 persons among them the Head of the LTTE Political Wing and leader of the LTTE negotiating team Mr. S.P. Tamilselvan.

SLMM is deeply concerned with this alarming development, which can only contribute to even further escalation of the conflict, unless the parties cease the hostilities and return to talks.

The SLMM extends its condolences to the families of the victims.
