Military officials said, the raid that killed six terrorists including the LTTE's so-called "Political" chief Tamilchelvan had taken place in an area at Thuruaiaru in Iranamadu, Kilinochchi district. The area, approximately 70 kilometers north of Vavuniya, has drawn intensified air sorties in recent weeks in response to a new wave of LTTE activities along the Wanni and Northern defences.

An informed military official speaking to defence.lk web, said the SLAF jets pounded another LTTE "Black Tiger" facility located north east of Iranamdu, in consecutive sorties and believed heavy damages were caused to the outfit though figures were not yet confirmed.

NGO activists who arrived at the scene were denied access by LTTE elements, our informed sources said.

Military sources said it took many weeks of painstaking exploitation of intelligence, until today morning when they had "definitive, unquestionable" knowledge of an LTTE high profile gathering including Tamilchelvan's location. He said after the first target was achieved forces went after other targets in simultaneous raids in North East of Iranamadu and on the outskirts.

According to defence sources, today's aerial raid was resulted from professional and coordinated military intelligence network based on real-time information.

Military officials paid tribute to the role played in the attack by military intelligence agencies and the valiant fighter pilots operating with stealth and speed behind the enemy lines.

"There has been very close cooperation, of course, between everyone - the ground troops and the air force," defence sources said.

"This is a message to all those who use violence killing, suicide bombing and devastation to disrupt life of Tamils and other Sri Lankans to rethink within themselves before it is too late."

"They should stop now," he said. "They should renounce violence immediately while there is still time" defence sources further added.
