Ambassador Jayatilleka responds to IFJ, RSF criticism on bombing of Voice of Tigers
28.11.2007

The Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Sri Lanka to the United Nations in Geneva H.E. Dr. Dayan Jayatilleka in responding to criticism by the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) and Reporters Sans Frontieres (RSF), states that the Voice of Tigers, being the propaganda organ of an internationally proscribed terrorist organization, is a legitimate target.

The full text of his response is as follows:

The radio station concerned was neither an independent media organisation nor located in an independent country. In short it was neither legal nor legitimate. It was not, for instance Al Jazeera or the Serbian TV.

It was a propaganda organ of an armed organisation which is self avowedly separatist, has been designated terrorist by many countries, and has just this morning made a suicide bomb assassination attempt on a Tamil Minister of a democratically elected Govt.

The employment of civilians in that facility, if indeed there were any, was a choice made by the Tamil Tigers. The target was a legitimate one.
