For the first time in Sri Lanka’s mobile services
history, customers are now provided with Sinhala and Tamil
SMS alerts on their Mobitel connections.
Sri
Lanka Telecom Mobitel; the National Mobile Service Provider
in collaboration with Lankapuvath; the National News Agency
of Sri Lanka officially launched the service today (27)
in Colombo.
Speaking
on the significance of this service, Chairman of the Sri
Lanka Telecom Ltd, P.A. Weerasinghe De Silva said “The
combination of the technology we provide and of their
reliability in the gathering and the dissemination of
news goes a long way in ensuring the success of this service.”
“After
restructuring the Lankapuvath, my prime objective was
upgrading it to the international standards at the same
time; I saw a gap in the society, especially among rural
masses they were not receiving latest news and information
in a language which they can understand. It was the main
reason which they were compelled to be away from current
affairs. “Said the Chairman and Managing Director
Pradeep Gunawardana.
He
said that plans are under way to offer the opportunity
of watching latest happenings as visuals using the GPRS
technology enabled mobile phone.
The
service is powered by the technology of the Science Land
Corporation Ltd, which already partnered with Mobitel
in launching two other langue related services; namely
the Sinhala/Tamil SMS and the Translator.
To
register the service Mobitel customers have to follow
two simple steps. They can download the latest version
of ‘Thibus Me Sinhala/Tamil SMS’ application
from the Mobitel WAP site and type ‘puvath’
in Sinhala (For alerts in Sinhala) or ‘seythikal’
in Tamil (For ‘alerts’ in Tamil) and send
to 2233. there will be no additional charges for the application,
with only normal GPRS charges applicable.
