President to Iran to strengthen bilateral ties

On arriving in Iran, President Mahinda Rajapaksa was welcomed by President of Iran, Mahmoud Ahmedinejad and accorded a guard of honour. After the Royal ceremony the two leaders had bilateral discussions focused on economic, political and social issues which were of interests to both nations.

Both were in agreement to strengthening the traditional friendship between the two nations. They discussed the possibility of agreeing on Iranian assistance to the oil refinery project, Uma oya project, and the development of railways, transport and cooperation in the sphere of tourism.

Following the discussions bilateral pacts are due to be signed by the two countries on economic cooperation.

Iran being one of the leading buyers of Ceylon tea, Sri Lanka pursued for the increase of export of tea.

President Rajapaksa did not forget to thank Iran for its assistance in emergencies. He also communicated to Iranian President on the peace efforts of the Government.

The President was due to address a Sri Lanka investment seminar in Teheran. A delegation of senior ministers including Petroleum Minister A.H.M. Fowzie and senior officials are accompanying the President.
