President Mahinda Rajapaksa accompanied by First Lady, Shiranthi
Rajapaksa on arrival at the Entabbe Air Port in Uganda were
received warmly by the Ugandan Minister of State for Trade,
Nelson Gagwal and the Sri Lankan High Commissioner for Kenya
and Uganda M.K. Kieran.
The President and the entourage received a rousing welcome
from the natives who had thronged the decorated streets
with Ugandan and Sri Lankan Flags to get a glimpse of the
President. The City was decorated with Flags of the Commonwealth
countries fluttering colourfully along the highway from
the Air Port to the Munyonyo Resort in Kampala where the
delegation is to be accommodated.
Security
was tight along the 40 kilometer road the distinguished
visitors moved in a motorcade.
The
Commonwealth Summit opens today and would continue till
the 25th. Sri Lankan being one of the pioneering nations
in the non-aligned movement receives pride of place at the
summit. Similarly the Commonwealth plays a vital role among
World Bodies. The 53 member Commonwealth Association is
also referred to as a voluntary association by foreign critics.
The theme of this year’s summit is “Directing
the people of the member states towards a healthy transformation
in political, economic, and human resource development.”
Adhering to this theme the summit will focus its attention
on such matters as territorial development, youth enterprise
development, conflict resolution and environmental changes.
