November 2007 Presidents’
Secretary Lalith Weeratunga has extended an invitation for
the JVP to have talks with the President but having discussions
with the President at this moment would not serve any purpose
said JVP Leader Somawansa Amarasinghe. Addressing the media
at a media briefing held in Colombo today Mr. Amarasinghe
said the President has not comprehended the issue properly.
The
president has extended the invitation basing on a statement
Mr. Amarasinghe made at the November Heroes Commemoration
Ceremony held at National Youth Council Auditorium on the
13th. The media has wrongly reported Mr. Amarasinge’s
statement as ‘forwarding preconditions of the JVP
to vote for the budget proposals’ and the President
has sent the letter basing on those wrong reports said Mr.
Amarasinghe.
“The
issue cannot be summarized to four conditions. The issue
is not so trivial. The sovereignty and territorial integrity
of this country has to be safeguarded. The first is National
security. Next a rapid economic progress should be achieved.
The gains of this economic progress should be divided equally
among everybody. This is the need before the country. The
President has not comprehended what we demand for and for
what. Hence, we cannot do anything about this letter. It
is the President and the government that have to do a lot.
They should formulate a programme to take the country forward
and prove to the country that they have the courage to implement
such a programme,” said Mr. Amarasinghe.
A
decision cannot be taken basing only on the budget as there
are numerous political factors that have to be considered
said Mr. Tilvin Silva, General Secretary of the JVP at the
media briefing. Hence it was not proper for his party to
announce a decision now as things could change even tomorrow.
He said the JVP will study the situation until the last
moment to take its decision. Mr. Silva said his party doesn’t
have any uncertainty but would take the most correct decision
to give the utmost to the country.
“We,
in the Parliament, media discussions and elsewhere, presented
the most scientific criticism regarding the budget. We criticized
this budget rigorously. What the UNP did was to buy government
MPs and conspire to make this an opportunity to come to
power. The President too made his contribution by trying
to pay more and secure his power,” said Mr. Tilvin
Silva.
Mr.
Wimal Weerawansa addressing the media said, “Even
when an MP bumps on to another in the Parliament the term
used is ‘Rs.50 million banged on me!’”
“People’s representatives who have come to the
Parliament with people’s votes have come down to that
low and disgusting level. However, the MPs of the JVP have
not come down to that low level said Mr. Weerawansa.
