Defensive operations continues; troops dislodge more terror bunkers in Jaffna front

Sri Lanka Army soldiers engaged in defensive operations against LTTE infiltration attempts at Northern and Wanni Forward Defences had several confrontations with LTTE terrorists during last 24 hours. Reports received from Jaffna, Vavuniya and Mannar fronts indicate at least 19 terrorists were killed and many others were injured during these incidents.

Jaffna

In the northern theatre, troops deployed in the Muhamalai area ran at the terrorists' first line of defence around 5 this morning (November 15) and dislodged five bunkers occupied by LTTE. According to the ground sources four terrorists were killed in this incident. The soldiers have returned to their previous positions. No casualties to own troops.

The second incident took place when troops confronted with a group of terrorists who had attempted to breach the Army defence in the Muhamalai area around 8:20 in the same morning (November 15). The soldiers successfully thwarted the terror offensive causing the terrorists to run off the area. Radio monitoring has revealed that one LTTE cadre was killed in this incident. The slain LTTE cadre has been identified as "captain" Isei Amudan, the same sources added.

Separately, Army soldiers gunned down another LTTE cadre who had attempted to infiltrate the forward defence at Muhamalai around 6 last evening (November 14).

The latest report received from Jaffna front says that LTTE might have suffered heavy casualties when Army engaged artillery weapons at a terrorists' gathering in the Pallay area around 11:45 this morning (November 15). Defence sources said that Army gunners took a precise artillery shoot at the gathering after having received intelligence through reliable sources. Radio monitoring following the attack indicated a chaotic situation among LTTE elements in the area.

Vavuniya

In the Vavuniya front, LTTE radio transmission has revealed that nine terrorists were killed in clashes with troops in the Palaimoddai, Nedunkandai and Vilattkkulama areas yesterday (November 14). Ground sources have also confirmed that four terrorists were killed when they attacked terrorists' bunkers in the above mentioned areas on the same day.

Further, troops deployed in the Kallikkulama area detected and attacked a group of LTTE cadres around 7:45, last morning (November 14). The terrorists also responded using small arms and 81 mm mortars, ground sources said. One soldier was killed and another injured in this incident. The injured soldier was later evacuated to the Military Hospital Anuradhapura. Ground sources confirmed one LTTE cadre was killed and many others injured in the same incident.

Meanwhile, troops engaged in mine clearing operations in the Vilathikulama area removed 192 anti personnel mines during yesterday's operations (November 14).

In the Kannadi area, four soldiers sustained injuries in anti-personnel mine operations yesterday (November 14). The injured were admitted to Military Hospital Anuradhapura.

Mannar

In the Mannar front, troops engaged in clearing operation in the Pallaikuli area confronted with a group of LTTE terrorists around 8:30 this morning (November 15). One LTTE cadre was killed and another injured while one soldier was also killed in this incident.

At Cheddiyarkaddiadampan, Army elite units ambushed a group of LTTE infiltrators around 2 this afternoon (November 15). Ground sources have revealed that two terrorists were killed and four others were injured in this incident. During the subsequent search soldiers have recovered two T-56 riffles.

Defensive operations are continuing.
