Loudspeakers
and amplifiers have been banned from 10.00 p.m. to 6.00 p.m. from
today. The Supreme Court made the interim order considering a
petition filed by a group of residents at Weligama opposing sound
pollution.
According
to Supreme Court rule those willing to use loudspeakers during
the period from 10.00 p.m. to 6.00 a.m. for religious festivals
should submit an application to the nearest magistrate’s
court.
Announcing
the ruling Chief Justice Sarath N. Silva, who chaired the three-judge
bench panel, said that nobody has a right to make unbearable noises
as they wish. He said the order was a measure to safeguard the
environment and ordered the Defense Secretary and the IGP to take
stern action against those who violate the court order.
