Government extends state of emergency

The motion for the extension of the state of emergency by one month has been passed in parliament this afternoon by a majority of 59 votes.

In todays voting, 76 votes were cast in favor of the motion. The JVP voted in favor of the motion together with the government. The TNA voted against the motion while the UNP abstained from voting.

At the parliamentary debate for the extension of the state of emergency by one month, Minister Milroy Fernando said that the tribute of all Catholics is extended to the President, the Government and the Security Units for freeing the Madu Church from the terrorists.

He said the renovation of the church will begin soon and soldiers have now left the area. He assured that people will be able to pay their reverence to the sacred church with safety in the near future.

Parliamentarian venerable Ellawala Medhananda Thera noted that the liberation of the Madu Church is going one step closer to the liberation of the north.
