Minister
Nimal Siripala De Silva has been yesterday appointed unanimously
to the post of Chairman of the Executive Committee of
the World Health Organisation. He was elected at the Executive
Committee Meeting of the WHO in Geneva Switzerland today.
Minister Nimal Siripala De Silva is the first and the
only Sri Lankan ever to be honored by a high position
of the World Health Organization.
The
Executive Committee, which is comprised of 34 out of the
193 members, deals with the administrative functions of
the WHO including taking policy decisions and preparation
of annual programmes.
Minister
Nimal Siripala De Silva was first appointed to the Executive
Committee in 1988 and he has functioned as a Vice President
for some time.
The
WHO has decided to confer the post of Chairman to Minister
De Silva taking into consideration his skills and commitment
to the wellbeing of the organization. He is the first
and the only Sri Lankan ever to be honored by a high position
of the World Health Organization.
