Vinayagmoorthy Muralitharan (aka Karuna Amman) released – British High Commission

10.5.2008

Vinayagmoorthy Muralitharan (aka Karuna Amman) was released yesterday (08 May) following his imprisonment for possessing false documents, contrary to Section 25 of the Control of Identification Documents (Offences) Act 2005. He now remains under immigration detention powers. This was revealed in a Press Release put out by the British High Commission in Colombo.

The press release further adds:

“We have made clear our concerns at the circumstances by which Karuna travelled to the UK.

We are deeply concerned that Karuna and his faction have allegedly been responsible for murder and abductions and are still believed to be involved in intimidation and child recruitment. The Crown Prosecution Service has advised the Metropolitan Police Service that there is insufficient evidence to provide a realistic prospect of conviction for any criminal offences in the UK.”

In the meantime, news reaching Asian Tribune from foreign sources claim that Vinayagamoorthi Muralitharan, former leader of the Tamil Makkal Viduthalai Pulikal has been transferred on 08 May from custody in Prison, having served his sentence for breaching the UK's Immigration laws by entering the UK carrying a forged Diplomatic Passport.

It is learnt that British prison authorities have transferred Karuna Amman to the UK's Border & Immigration Agency and it is said that he is presently being detained at an Immigration Detention Centre in the outskirts of London. When the Press Office of the UK's Border & Immigration Agency was contacted, a member of staff stated that they do not comment on individual cases however the UK's Home Office has released a statement that "Karuna Amman will remain detained under Immigration Powers".
