The Australia Sri Lanka Medical Aid Team had a successful fund raising evening at Oakleigh on Saturday 26 th May. Dulani Heenetigala – an engineering graduate and AusLMAT member has been in charge of the free English classes for needy children and adults in southern Sri Lanka. Her dedication to this project has seen the teaching of English extended to Tangalle , Matara , Weligama and Hambantota from Galle where it originally started with the aid of the Southern Tsunami Trust. Professor Sujeewa Amarasena of the department of paediatrics at the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital is a trustee of the Southern Tsunami Trust and strongly believes that the teaching of English is as important a part of the outreach program of AusLMAT as is the medical work we do.

Dulani has visions of extending this program to cover the island and all funds raised last night will go towards the funding of English teachers and aids and books and pens and pencils.

AusLMAT has a request to assist the teaching of English to Dodanduwa – a project that was commenced by the Dodanduwa Weerasooriya Family Trust.

AusLMAT has also been requested by the Ministry of Health to take the Dickoya Hospital under it's wing. A container with beds and other medical equipment will shortly leave Melbourne with items specifically for the Dickoya Hospital.

Dulani and AusLMAT are grateful to the many people who attended the fund raiser and the support given by those who were unable to attend.

Dilshan Fernando, Dr. Sian Hughes, Dr. David Young, Nalin Dassenaike , Ron Meerwald , Nalini and Robyn Joseph and Ranjini Dassenaike were members of AusLMAT who assisted last night. Johan Jayasinha from (SNNI) and Hemal Gurusinghe (Ch 31) were in charge of the photography.
