LTTE claymore mine explosion triggers panic in Omanthai
Despite giving written guarantees to abstain from obstructing and endangering civilian and goods transportation through the Omanthai Entry/Exit point, LTTE terrorists triggered off a claymore mine targeting an Army route clearing patrol, hours before the trunk road was reopened for general traffic today(21).
The claymore mine was triggered off at a location west of Omantahi, at 08.14a.m, killing two soldiers, the military officials further stated.
Meanwhile, SL Army troops repulsed a pre-dawn terrorist offensive at the Weli-Oya Forward Defence Lines(FDLs), on Monday the 21st of May. Two soldiers made their ultimate sacrifice, while thrashing the terrorist offensive and forcing then to retreat with heavy losses. According to defence sources, the terrorist casualty figures were not confirmed, through intercepted LTTE communication.
Military officials said that it was believed the terrorists had sustained major damages.
The Omanthai Entry/ Exit point was closed last week when the LTTE launched indiscriminate mortar shells fell in distances of the A-9 trunk road, disturbing civilian movement. Following the terrorist attack the SL military took evasive measures to secure civilian and free flow of goods traffic across the entry / exit point.
Subsequently, the military officials had requested the ICRC to urge the LTTE to response positively, while freezing further terrorist attacks disturbing civilian traffic along the trunk road, binding the life line of the Jaffna peninsula.
Later, according to military sources the Omanthai entry/ exit point was re-opened for general traffic since 09.15a.m, facilitated through the area ICRC officials. |
