LTTE is continuing to abduct the children from Jaffna to be trained fighters. As the indiscriminate abductions continue unabated, Jaffa families have sought protection for their children. Many parents in Jaffna have started to hand over their children in to the custody of the Human Right's Commission (HRC).

Some 200 children have been handed over to the HRC by their parents for safety and they are now accommodated in a special building in Jaffna following a court order.

HRC member and former Supreme Court judge Dharmasiri Jayawickrama has stated that these children, whose parents had feared that they would be abducted by the LTTE, are being cared for by Prisons officials.

The HRC says a large number of parents had started sending their children either to Colombo, to other parts of the country or abroad, fearing LTTE conscription.

The building where the children are now accommodated is fast becoming inadequate and the HRC is looking for a new building, he said.

Meanwhile, by end March the HRC has received 147 complaints of the LTTE abductions of the small children.
