Parliament Speaker W.J.M. Lokubandara evicted Tamil National Alliance (TNA) MP S. Gajendran from the sessions yesterday (10) for his remarks made violating the terms of the constitution. Mr. Gajendran had to be removed from the House as he had not paid attention to the request made by the Speaker to make an apology over his statement and to withdraw it.
Many MPs, both of the ruling party and the opposition, have strongly criticized Mr. Gajendran's remarks on existence of a second air force and that would attack only enemy targets.
Leader of the House Nimal Siripala De Silva have said all Members of Parliament had taken oaths under the 6th amendment to the constitution to protect the unitary status of the country. As such, Mr. Gajendran's statement had breached this pledge.
Minister de Silva said some interpretation had to be obtained on the breach of the pledge. He called on the Speaker to direct this matter to the Attorney General on what action should be initiated.
JVP Member of Parliament Wimal Weerawansa has noted that no one had the right of making such an open threat, simply because of being an MP.
Chief Opposition Whip Joseph Michael Perera said that his party too was against terrorism. |
