The
funeral of the late MP Anura Bandaranaike will be held at
Horagolla, the ancestral home of the Bandaranaike family
on Wednesday, 19th of March.
The
former Speaker's body will be taken to the parliamentary
complex tomorrow (18) for his parliamentary colleagues
to pay their last respects.
President
Mahinda Rajapaksa also visited the late MP's official
residence, 'Wisumpaya' in Colombo today (17) to pay his
last respect to his long time political associate and
friend.
Mr.
Bandaranayike passed away yesterday (16) after a prolonged
illness at his Colombo residence.
Mr.
Bandaranaike, son of two Prime Ministers, S.W. R.D. Bandaranaike
and Sirimavo Bandaranaike and the brother of Sri Lanka's
first woman President, Chandrika Kumaratunga, was educated
at Royal College and Oxford and was the Foreign Policy
Advisor to his mother while she Prime Minister from 1970-77.
He
was first elected to Parliament from the Nuwara Eliya-Maskeliya
electorate in 1977 and was re-elected from the Gampaha
District subsequently under the Proportional Representation
system. Mr. Bandaranaike was the Minister of Higher Education
under President D.B. Wijetunga and was unanimously elected
Speaker in 2001. He also held the portfolios of Foreign
Affairs, Tourism and National Heritage.
