Following the successful election
of local bodies in the District of Batticaloa, President
Mahinda Rajapaksa has directed the Commissioner General
to announce the date calling for nominations to the first
elections to the Eastern Provincial Council in almost two
decares, President's media said on Wednesday (12).
Accordingly, elections to the Eastern Provincial Council
will most likely be held in May this year.
The conduct of elections to the Eastern Provincial Council
is a key part of the government's decision to implement
the 13th Amendment to the Constitution, as recommended
by the All Party Representative Committee (APRC) in the
search for an end to the crisis in Sri Lanka.
Elections
to the Local Government bodies of the Batticaloa District
of the Eastern Province held on March 10 was a peaceful
with brisk polling, more than 55% of those registered
voting, political annalists observed.
