11.3.2008

According to the results of the yesterday's mini polls for the district of Batticaloa, the Tamil Makkal Viduthalai Puligal (TMVP) has secured 8 out of 9 local councils. The TVMP secured control of the local bodies in Eravurpattu, Koralepattu, Koralepattu North, Manmunai South & Eruvilpattu, Manmunaipattu, Manmunai West, Manmunai South West and Porativupattu, while the United People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA) won the Batticaloa Municipal Council, contesting with the TMVP.

The Election Commissioner's Department says the breakdown of members for the nine local councils is as follows: TMVP- 61, UPFA- 15, SLMC-7, Independent groups -17, Elaval Democratic Front- 1.

The Election Commissioner said that the total number of registered voters for the Batticaloa district was 270,471 and out of which 161,749 voters have declared their votes. A total of 19,772 votes were rejected. Accordingly, 67% of the voters have declared their votes in this election.

The mostly free and fair election held after 14 years in this Batticaloa District clearly demonstrates the people's need to enter into a democratic governing process and the rejection of communal and other identity based ideologies, political analysts say.
