Contrary
to speculation from some quarters, including certain media
institutions, no election-related incidents had been reported
by the time polls closed today, according to Kinsley Rodrigo
of the election-monitoring outfit PAFFEREL.
Speaking
to the www.news.lk, the Official Government News Portal,
Rodrigo said that more than 51% of the total eligible
voters in Batticoloa have caste their vote at the election.
Meanwhile
Batticaloa DIG Nanayakkara stated that the Police had
taken steps to provide high-level security for every polling
station.
He
added that Batticoloa civilians showed great enthusiasm
throughout the day for voting. Around 4,200 Government
officials have been deployed for election duty.
According
to the electoral registry, 270,471 voters are eligible
participate in the election. Nine political parties and
22 Independent groups have fielded 831 candidates for
today's election.
