Sri Lanka female Muslim MP requests security over Marxists' threats

20.6.2008

Dissident Marxist Party MP Anjaan Umma has sent letter to the Inspector General of Police requesting to ensure her personal security. In her letter, Gampaha district MP says that she and her family have been intimidated by the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) MPs since she decided to act independently in the parliament.

Meanwhile, MP Umma’s husband, Thuwan Farook has logged complaint at the Meerigama police that his wife and son have gone missing since June 16. Police said that MP Umma has telephoned the police this morning and informed that she was safe but refrained from indicating her present location.

MP Umma has informed the IGP that JVP supporters are misleading her own family members to get hold of her again. Also, she has informed that the JVP supporters had even blocked her coming to the parliament before she decided to act independently.
