No interim agreements. UNP rebels insist Ranil should go

20.6.2008

A group of United National Party (UNP) rebel MPs have stated to the committee appointed to look into the party problems that Mr. Ranil Wickramasinghe should resign from the party leadership.

'Lanka-e-News' learns that the MPs Johston Fernando, Lakshman Senevirathna, Jayalath Jayawardhana and Ranjith Madduma Bandara made this suggestion before the committee yesterday (19).

One MP of this group said that Mr. Wickramasinghe should resign from party leadership while remaining as the Opposition Leader. They urged Rukman Senanayaka to be appointed as the party leader and vowed not to give in to any offer such as higher positions in the party.

The MP said that the struggle to oust Ranil would be continued in the Executive Committee in which the majority is appearing for a change in the leadership.

The Chairman of the committee appointed by the party leader to look into the party problems is MP Rukman Senanayaka. Others in the committee are Joseph Michael Perera, John Amarathunga, Sarathchandra Rajakaruna, Jayawickrama Perera, Amara Piyaseeli Rathnayaka and Renuka Herath.
