The
portraits of seven politicians who left their mark in Sri
Lankan politics were unveiled in the first floor of the
Parliament building in a special ceremony by Prime Minister
Ratnasiri Wickramanayake.
The
politicians thus honoured were, Dr. C.W.W. Kannangara, A.E.
Gunasinghe, Dr. S.A. Wickramasinghe, G.G. Ponnambalam,.
Dr. N.M. Perera, Phillip Gunawardena and Dr. T.B. Jayah.
The
Speaker, W.J.M.Lokubandara, speaking at the occasion said
that these leaders, although subscribing to different ideologies,
all worked tirelessly and selflessly for the freedom of
the country. He observed that the greatest honour that can
be bestowed upon these leaders is for present day parliamentarians
to understand the exemplary parliamentary culture and traditions
that helped create and act accordingly.
A
large and distinguised audience, including relatives of
the leaders honoured thus, the Leader of the Opposition,
Ranil Wickremesinghe and newly appointed Chief Government
Whip, Dinesh Gunawardena, were also present.
