The heated Executive Committee meeting
of the United National Party (UNP) that took place today
ended with a decision to pass the party leadership crisis
to a council of senior members.
MP
Johnston Fernando opened the criticism on the leadership
with a gushy speech and several other Wickramasinghe ex-loyalists
too, namely, Lakshman Senevirathna and Jayalath Jayawardhana,
followed him in the same tone.
MP Lakshman Kiriella pointed out the need for a settlement
between the two factions and several Executive Committee
members including Renuka Herath spoke after him supporting
the party leadership.
Both
factions agreed to forward the issue to a committee of seniors
comprised of Joseph Michael Perera, John Amarathunga, Renuka
Herath, Sarathchandra Rajakaruna and Gamini Jayawickrama
Perera.
Neither
UNP leader Ranil Wickramasinghe nor National Organizer S.
B. Disanayaka expressed their views.
The Executive Committee decided to appoint Lakshman Kiriella
and Ravi Samaraweera as organized of elections in North
Central and Sabaragamuwa Provincial Councils respectively.
However, no decision was made on the Chief Minister candidates.
