The Borella Police, investigating on civilian information uncovered a claymore mine weighing around 20 Kgs at Obesekarapura, Rajagiriya on Tuesday the 26th of June, at 1 p.m.

The mine was transported to Colombo, concealed in the diesel tank of a double cab, belonging to Local Government Commissioner in Kilinochchi, said the Borella Police officials.

Alert civilians having observed a hasty change of the diesel tank of a double-cab that has come from Kilinochchi inside a garage in Welikada have entertained suspicion and alerted the Police afterwards.

According to the Borella Police officials, the claymore mine was buried in a privately owned land. Further interrogations from the suspects led to the recovery of the claymore mine.

However, the vehicle after reinstalling the new fuel tank has gone to a house on Sri Kanda Devale Rd at Rajagiriya and immediately buried the removed tank with the claymore mine intact.

Statements made to the Police by the arrestees confirmed that the state -owned double cab with the claymore mine inside the fuel tank has started off from Kilinochchi and wended its way to Colombo for this clandestine mission.

The timely information received through a civilian source, averted a possible tragedy, the officials added giving full credit to the public for collaborating with the security personnel.
