The information center established to gather information about the abductions that occur in Colombo and the in the suburb commenced its official work at Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall (BMICH) today.
This center was instituted under the direction of the President Mahinda Rajapaksa. Public can reach the center and are requested to submit any information regarding abductions to the officers at the center from now onward.
The President has appointed a committee comprising of Minister Dullas Alahaperuma, Minister Rajitha Senaratne, Deputy Minister P. Radhakrishnan, Deputy Minister K. Baiz and the opposition leader of the Colombo Municipal Council- Vasudeva Nanayakkara as the team to supervise the progress of the center.
Speaking Taking at the official launch of the center Minister Dullas Alahaperuma said the functioning of this center will restrain the opportunity of gaining short term political benefits highlighting alleged incidents related to abductions and disappearances. He assured that this will equally treat all communities in finding the roots of abductions and disappearance and will bring an end to repeating of such occurrences.
Deputy Minister K.Baiz said that although there are many rumors in abductions of people from the Muslim business community so far no complaints have been lodge reported with such issues and the Minister requests the public to report of such incidents to the center immediately.
“None out of the six Muslim men was abducted who were claimed to be missing previously,” Minister added.
The committee is scheduled to hold a special discussion with the Inspector General of Police on Saturday the 30 th .
In last week the Government initiated two special operation cells to collect information and take immediate action on complaints of abductions and extortions in Colombo and suburbs. These two units will function 24 hours of the day and are operated from Presidential Secretariat and from the Police.
