The Defence Ministry will allocate a squad of not less than eight trained police officers with automatic weapons, for the personal security of Major General Janaka Indrajith Perera. Most of these officers will be from the Ministerial Security Division. The General may select his security personnel.

The local police will provide protection when the General travels through the province, during the campaign.

These security measures will last only till the campaign for the Provincial Council polls in the North Central Province lasts.

This was the agreement reached before the Supreme Court, between the Secretary to the Defence Ministry, Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, and the petitioner General Perera who had complained that the State failed to give him adequate security.

Mohan Peiris PC, who appeared for the Defence Ministry, explained to the Supreme Court, that the Defence Ministry will give the best possible security arrangements to Major General Janaka Indrajith Perera, the Chief Ministerial candidate of the UNP for the North Central Province. But, it was not possible to release any soldiers. Not less than eight trained police officers with automatic weapons would be deployed. The petitioner General will have to rent the vehicles he needs.

Counsel Pieris said that, there is no such intense security threat, as is indicated in the petition. All Generals and politicians face some kind of danger, at certain times.

Ronald Perera, Counsel for General Perera, pointed out, that, Pillaiyan who was a former terrorist was granted adequate security, whereas General Perera, had been denied suitable security measures. The Chief Justice Sarath N. Silva said that persons should not be referred to as 'former terrorists' and so on. The Chief Justice said that he travels without any security. He is honest and true to his conscience. The elements protect him.

Senior State Counsel, Parinda Ranasinghe appeared for the Attorney General.

The Bench comprised, the Chief Justice, Sarath N. Silva, Justice N. G. Amaratunga and Justice P. A. Ratnayake. Mohan Pieirs PC, appeared for Gotabhaya Rajapaksa.
